Auckland Travel Information

About Auckland

Auckland is nicknamed the ‘City of Sails’ because of its downtown waterfront location and the local’s fascination with the sea. Auckland is New Zealand's biggest city and the CBD and surrounding areas are home to one third of New Zealand’s population. The city gives visitors plenty of places to go, as well as a whole lot of activities to keep even the most adventurous traveller busy. The best thing is that the city is so accessible. You can grab a Budget rental car and drive from Auckland Airport to Auckland City in about 30 minutes.

Few of the world’s great cities can boast a location like Auckland. The Hauraki Gulf is at the front door, and the wild west coast beaches are out the back. It’s also the arrival point for many visitors due to the large international airport and two domestic terminals for frequent flights to other New Zealand destinations. If you want to check out the culture and heritage of Auckland’s Suburbs, you can grab a Budget rental from East Tamaki, Manukau City or Penrose. A Budget rental car is just what you need for a truly awesome adventure!

Make sure your itinerary includes a few days in and around Auckland to find out what it is that earns the city consistent top five rankings in international lifestyle surveys. You can even get a Budget rental on the city’s North Shore. It’s particularly beautiful in the north, with open, white sandy beaches, friendly locals and a great restaurant culture.

Auckland road trips.

Driving around New Zealand is an excellent way to see this beautiful countryside. Whichever direction you head in Auckland, you'll almost always stumble across a beach.

Take the East Coast Road and you'll soon see the turn-offs for many popular bays and beaches on the Waitemata Harbour, each one perfect for a swim. Head the other way on the West Coast Road, and things are surprisingly different. Suburbia is left far behind as you cut through the lowest saddle in the Waitakere Ranges. You’ll end up at Piha, one of New Zealand’s most loved black sand beaches.

Flights

Air New Zealand and Jetstar provide comprehensive coverage for domestic flights within New Zealand and a large number of international carriers operate flights to New Zealand.

Air New Zealand also provide low cost flights on a daily basis through the Grab A Seat website. But you have to be quick as the deals are limited.

Jetstar is a low cost carrier so fares are generally cheaper, but you pay for in-flight services.
