About Christchurch
The first four ships arrived from England to settle Christchurch in 1850. In less than 160 years they and their progeny built central Christchurch from scratch, into the attractive blend of Victorian, Edwardian architecture interwoven with contemporary urbanism it is today.
While in Christchurch take the time to enjoy a romantic ride on the Avon River in a punt, complete with an Edwardian punter in a straw boater hat or alternatively explore historic churches and buildings, museums, galleries, parks and gardens. Your trip from Christchurch airport to the central city shopping and hotel area can be a lovely quiet drive if you hire a Budget rental.
Christchurch road trips
Christchurch and the overall Canterbury region (in which the city is located), offers a great range of varied road trips from the scenic Alpine Pacific Touring Route to the well-known Arthur’s Pass.
As you drive from the South Pacific to the Southern Alps, the transitions in architecture, flora and geology are wonderful to see. Colonial villages with Victorian features and large elms and oaks give way to braided shingle rivers and perfectly smooth floodplains.
Flights
Air New Zealand provide a great range of domestic flights throughout New Zealand, as well as international flights to and from Australia, the South West Pacific, Asia, North America, Europe and the United Kingdom.
