About Greymouth
Most of the towns on the West Coast of the South Island owe their beginnings at least in part to those feverish days of the New Zealand Gold Rush. Greymouth, the largest town on the South Island's West Coast, is no exception.
Located at the mouth of the Grey River, it was named for Governor George Grey, a key figure in colonial New Zealand.
Visitors to the area can enjoy a huge range of activities from black-water (cave) and white-water rafting, 4WD bike rides, lake cruises on Lake Brunner at Moana, dolphin watching from the breakwater of the Grey River, canoeing, scenic flights… the list is endless. And the best way to get around Greymouth is in a Budget rental car. You can get one from the Hokitika Airport on arrival.
Greymouth road trips
There's no such thing as a direct route through the Southern Alps. The roads tend to go where mountain passes allow them to, including several kilometres of cliff-hugging roads offering spectacular coastline views.
Scenic road trips from Greymouth include Karamea (via Pancake Rocks), Murchison, and Franz Josef Glacier through Hokitika and the beautiful Lake Wahapo.
A visit to the Blue Pools of Haast Pass is also essential while you’re in the area. The road over Haast Pass is one of the most beautiful roads available in New Zealand. The journey offers a variable landscape and one of the best walks in the country: The Blue Pools Walk. It has become world-renowned as a must-see walk, and views of the mountains are absolutely breathtaking. The track continues deep into the forest, and ends up at a series of crystal clear pools, carved by centuries of erosion.
