About Nelson
Nelson, known as New Zealand’s sunshine capital, is the fourth largest urban centre in the South Island and has a wealth of history built around a bustling central township of cool cafés and restaurants. The city’s sense of taste also extends beyond fine food and wine to a healthy fascination with the arts.
The area also offers some natural scenic wonders including the not-to-be-missed Abel Tasman National Park, known for its golden sand beaches, turquoise waters, Tonga Island Marine Reserve, fascinating rock formations, and the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. The Nelson Lakes National Park, including Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa, Kahurangi National Park, and Farewell Spit, the longest natural sandbar in the world, are also close by for both the adventurous and lovers of the outdoors.
Nelson road trips
Travelling in nearly all directions from Nelson will take you on a beautiful and scenery filled adventure. The road to Picton is a particularly nice trip and will take you past many seaside towns as well as the spectacular Pelorus Bridge, a nice place to have a swim and explore the foothills.
Day or overnight trips to one of the many national parks in the Nelson region (staying in Motueka or Murchison depending on your direction) should also be on any Nelson holiday itinerary.
