About Taupo
Taupo is situated at the outflow of the Waikato River from Lake Taupo, a point that is connected by the impressive Huka Falls - a great area for picnics and nature walks. The central North Island town has many cafés and restaurants that overlook the picturesque lake, as well as a good variety of retail therapy available within the city itself.
Lake Taupo, and the many streams and rivers that flow into the lake provides excellent fishing opportunities as well as a platform for a whole range of water-based sporting activities including sailing and waterskiing. Also situated close to Taupo is a range of volcanic mountains, including Mount Ruapehu the primary location for snow skiing in the North Island.
Taupo road trips
The Taupo region is blessed with incredible landscapes and natural beauty thanks to the enormous tracts of land that have been preserved here for national parks. Pick up a Budget rental from either Downtown Taupo or Taupo Airport and take a scenic drive between Taupo to Ohakune, travelling either via the National Park, or Waiouru and the Desert Road.
Also well worth a day trip is one of New Zealand’s best geothermal parks, the valley of Orakei Korako. Hidden from the main highways, and about 25 minutes north of Taupo, the unspoilt ‘Hidden Valley’ of Orakei Korako is a geothermal wonderland of gushing geysers, boiling mud pools and some of the largest silica terraces in the world.
