About Wellington
The heart of New Zealand politics, Wellington is where New Zealand’s parliamentary buildings including the ‘Beehive’ are located. Nestled between a dramatic harbour and forested hills, Wellington is also the place to catch the inter-island ferry service to Picton, boasted as the prettiest ferry ride in the world. While you’re there you can pick up a Budget rental car for driving around Wellington City, or grab a rental for getting to and from Wellington Airport or even for taking a trip out of town.
In and around Wellington city there are several museums, art galleries and historic buildings including the vast Te Papa Tongarewa, or English paraphrase of the Maori name, ‘our place’. Wellington is compact and interesting – the downtown area and waterfront are ideal for explorations on foot.
Wellington road trips
The roads around Wellington and the lower North Island are varied. Some are straight roads that take the shortest distance between two points, while others sweep lazily around undulating countryside or twist and turn tightly as they scale and descend the rocky ledges of steep gorges.
Two destinations worth a road trip from Wellington are Foxton and Masterton, via State Highway 1 and 2 respectively. Both places warrant a few days travel in order to check out variable scenery and unique small towns on the way.
