From Whakatane, State Highway 2 is a pleasant drive toward Tauranga and Mount Maunganui along the Pacific Coast Highway. An optional short day trip from Whakatane is to the 11km long Ohope Beach, which is much loved by families for its safe swimming and splendid white sand.
