Coronet Peak

Stylish and cosmopolitan, Coronet Peak is the South Island’s most popular mountain resort. Rolling natural terrain combined with sophisticated facilities in a striking new base building attracts skiers, boarders and spectators of all age ranges and abilities.

Coronet Peak’s 280 skiable hectares are accessed by a six seater express chair, an express quad, a double chair and T-bar. A dedicated beginner’s area has two surface conveyor lifts, a beginner tow and its own snowmaking.

Base area facilities include several eateries, a huge heated deck, Snowsports School, retail, rental and repair areas and a licensed crèche. Automated snowmaking capacity has been increased to ensure quality snow over a long season. The world class facilities combine with the region’s greatest variety of terrain to provide New Zealand’s premier winter experience.

In high season, the day starts early with ‘First Tracks’ pass holders hitting the slopes from 8am and on Friday and Saturday nights finishes late with night skiing until 9pm. The mountain’s longest run, the M1-Big Easy, is 2.4 km long and popular with intermediate and advanced skiers and riders.

Coronet Peak is the training ground of New Zealand’s National Ski Team and has a dedicated Race Arena. Sporting and social events include most Pacific Rim Winter Games alpine skiing events, the FIS rated Southern Cup and the Southern Hemisphere’s ultimate winter celebration, the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival.

Coronet Peak is an easy 25-minute (18km) drive from Queenstown. The ski area has a scheduled opening date of June 4th and the season generally lasts until mid October.

What's new at Coronet Peak?

At Coronet Peak, Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie has taken customer feedback from the 2010 season to help determine improvements made during the off-season. On the nzski.com website, he advised "This year we've focused on completing the trails associated with the Meadows Express quad chairlift installed last year and have improved certain areas known to get congested during peak times".

A new novice trail from the top of the Meadows Chairlift now takes skiers and boarders away from the busy lower M1, providing additional terrain on which they can progress confidently. Running parallel to this new trail is an area designated specially as a 'Kids' Fun Zone', complete with flags, berms and heaps of cool features.

Other big news for families heading up the mountain with little ones is the installation of a 102-metre carpet conveyor lift, starting from below the base of Meadows Express chairlift and travelling to the learners area. "Anyone who has kids on a ski field knows you've got to make it as easy as possible so all members of the family have a great day," said Mr McCrostie. "This makes the ride up to the learners area loads easier and it's great fun for the kids".

"We've also widened the trail on the Lower Big Easy to create a more consistent gradient and split the trail close to the base of the Meadows Express chair to make loading easier and help ease congestion at busy times." Five new snow guns have been installed on the modified and new trails to provide consistent early snow cover.
