After extensive re-building post-earthquake in November 2016, the northern section of State Highway 1 will re-open from Friday, December 15th, 2017. This now means that you may now choose to travel the direct coastal highway route from Picton through to Christchurch via Kaikoura should you wish to this summer.

It is important to note that whilst this direct link between Picton and Christchurch has re-opened, the road will not be open 24 hours a day. Sections north (21kms between Clarence and Mangamaunu) and south (8kms between Peketa and Goose Bay) of Kaikoura will close at 8.30pm in the evening, and then re-open again at 7am the following morning.
