Cure Kids - Novotel $10 Queenstown Challenge

Budget proudly supports Cure Kids and the Novotel $10 Queenstown Challenge.

The 2009 Novotel $10 Queenstown Challenge is a charity race where competing teams of two must travel from Auckland to Queenstown with only $10 to spend; requiring the generosity of fellow Kiwi’s to get them to the finish line. Teams cannot fly and must report to set check points each day, so everyday begins a new challenge. To add to the fun, teams must complete a series of mental and physical challenges along the way.

This year Budget is represented by Suzanne Scott  and Christina McKay who are competing as the "Budget Beauties". This team are determined to finish and hope to raise $15,000 for Cure Kids. All of us at Budget New Zealand will be cheering for Suzanne and Christina and we wish them all the best. For them, the most important part of competing is helping Cure Kids and winning would simply be "icing on the cake".

Meet our Cure Kids Ambassador - Rhianna Cratchley

Twelve-year-old Rhianna of Auckland was diagnosed with cancer in December 2008 during a routine check by a registrar at Starship Hospital following 6 months of undiagnosed illness.

After x rays, CT scan and a biopsy the cancer was later diagnosed as Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She is in the middle of 12 months of chemotherapy treatment as an outpatient visiting Starship on average every one to two weeks.

Rhianna lives with her parents Andrew and Tracy her sister Lily, 10 and their two kittens Sammy and Sally.

Rhianna’s interests include swimming, dancing, cooking and shopping. Rhianna had started cheerleading before becoming poorly, winning a medal with her team last year!

The support you give to Cure Kids goes along way to improving the lives of children like Rhianna. Please give generously.

Help turn research into hope

Cure Kids is the face of the Child Health Research Foundation. Over the last 30 years Cure Kids has dedicated millions of dollars to funding medical research for children with life-threatening illnesses. By better understanding these illnesses we can help improve the everyday lives of seriously-ill children and one day, find the cures that we all hope for. But it takes money – and lots of it to find these cures.

World First Breakthroughs

Cure Kids has helped fund research which includes world-first breakthroughs into:

  • Childhood Leukaemia
  • Cot Death
  • Hole-in-the-Heart Babies
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Genetic Birth Abnormalities

The findings from these projects and others have saved thousands of children's lives; lives that would have otherwise been lost. For thousands of other children, Cure Kids-funded research has helped create a longer and better quality of life.

Cure Kids Funding Medical Research

Over $23 Million has been invested in vital medical research including:

  • Cystic Fibrosis – nearly 400 New Zealander's suffer from this incurable lung disease
  • Childhood Leukaemia – childhood cancer is the leading cause of death in children after accidental death in New Zealand
  • Pneumonia – New Zealand has the highest hospital admission rate for childhood pneumonia in the western world. It costs the country $7million p.a.
  • Perinatal Research – Care for pre-term babies costs $50million + per annum
  • Asthma in Children – the biggest cause of hospital admissions in New Zealand, 550,000 school days lost each year to asthma
  • Genetic Research – 1 in 30 babies born in NZ will have some genetic birth malformation
  • Heart Disease – over 600 babies are born with heart defects each year – at least 300 will need corrective surgery – Cure Kids is funding research into a genetic heart disease that claims at least 40 lives a year
  • Type 1 Diabetes – Over 200 new children are diagnosed each year. It costs an estimated $1,000,000 to manage a Type 1 Diabetes child including the secondary complications in later life
  • Kidney Disease – a kidney transplant costs between $80,000 to $110,000, we’re funding new research that will hopefully improve the lives of these children with kidney disease

Today, Cure Kids are more committed than ever to help find answers to the many cruel, life-threatening illnesses that devastate the lives of young children and their families.

By better understanding these illnesses Cure Kids can help improve the everyday lives of seriously-ill children, and one day, find the cures that we all hope for.
