Car Hire Napier

Napier’s coastal location in the wine region of Hawke’s Bay, as well as its elegant art deco architecture, makes it a popular spot for tourists from elsewhere in New Zealand and beyond. The city makes a great base for exploring many of the North Island’s attractions, and hiring a car is the best way to get around. You easily spend weeks taking road trips to some of the areas beaches, wineries, and beautiful landscapes.

Public Transport in Napier

If you need to get to our car hire office using public transport, GoBus offers a comprehensive service connecting Napier with Hastings, Flaxmere, Havelock North, and Taradale.

Route no. 15 connects Napier city with the airport, and there are several connecting services with other towns and suburbs. 15 is a loop route leaving approximately every hour from Dalton Street, starting at 6.45am.

Family Accommodation in Napier

Napier is a family-friendly city, and there’s plenty of accommodation to choose from to suit all budgets.

Kennedy Park Resort in Napier is a great budget option for large families, as there are a number of different accommodation options to choose from, and lots of activities for kids on site. Choose from the campsite with power points for caravans, cabins that sleep up to 8, or motel units and villas suitable for 2-6 people. There’s a kids club, playground, pool, and kitchen and laundry facilities.

For family-friendly accommodation with beach views, try the Edgewater Motor Lodge on Marine Parade. The motel units include cooking and laundry facilities, and there’s a pool on-site and a large playground next door. Units range from studios that sleep three, to two-bedroom units with beds for up to six people.

The Crown Hotel is a more traditional beachfront hotel, and gets great reviews from families for its comfortable rooms and sea views.

If you’re after a centrally located hotel, try the Quest Napier on Dickens Street. As it’s right in the middle of the CBD, there are plenty of shops and restaurants close by, and it’s a short walk to the aquarium, the botanical gardens, and the beach. The one and two-bedroom apartments are ideal for families as they sleep up to five people.

Things to Do in Napier

Napier is a wonderful city to walk around and explore on foot. The Marine Parade coastal footpath offers a lovely walk with lots to see along the waterfront including sculptures, viewing platforms, a skate park, and a children’s bike park. Make sure to stop off at the Sunken Gardens for a stroll around to see its water features and attractive plants. The city centre is full of 1930s Art Deco buildings, which make great photo backdrops, and are fascinating for architecture buffs.

Napier is also a foodie city, and there are enough cafes, bars, and restaurants in the area and its surrounds to keep you happy for weeks. There’s a thriving coffee culture, and plenty of farmers’ markets so you can check out the best of the local produce. Hawke’s Bay is also known as a wine-producing area, and a visit to one of the 200+ vineyards is a must.

You’ll also find the National Aquarium of New Zealand in Napier, which has rescued Little Blue Penguins, and other native and non-native sea life and birds.

Kids also love the Faraday Centre – an interactive science museum with educational and fun exhibits for all ages.

Napier is also blessed to be surrounded by plenty of parks and nature. Bluff Hill Lookout is a great place to see the sunset, and to watch ships going in and out of the port. A visit to the city’s Botanical Gardens is also a must-do when you’re visiting Napier

An hour’s drive north of the city is Shine Falls – a beautiful waterfall with a pleasant hike across farmland to reach it. Te Ana and Tangoio Falls are also worth a visit, and have swimming holes for cooling off in the summer months. There are plenty of cycling tracks in town, and further out, that go past some of the wineries.

Napier Weather

Napier, as well as the wider Hawke’s Bay area, enjoys a mild and temperate climate, with average temperatures ranging from 9-14°C in the coldest month of July, to between 18°C and 25°C in the summer months from December to February.

Hawke’s Bay receives less rain on average than other areas of New Zealand, but there are occasional coastal storms and cyclones. Strong winds are also quite common.

You’ll need to fuel up before returning your rental vehicle to Budget New Zealand. There are several service stations located throughout central Napier including Mobil on Taradale Road, and Caltex and Allied Petroleum on Hyderabad Road. If you’re coming from the north, Z Bay View Truck Stop on Main North Road is closest to the airport and our car hire office.
