About Wanganui
Wanganui, situated near the sea on the banks of the Whanganui River, is a place of contrasts - undulating hills, flat beaches and rich native forests. During the early days of European settlement, Wanganui became an important trading post and the prominent heritage buildings in the city include the Royal Wanganui Opera House and the Sarjeant Art Gallery.
Close to the south-east end of the City Bridge is one of Wanganui’s more unusual features – an elevator tunnel leading to a monument on the top of Durie Hill. Built in 1919, it is one of only a few earthbound elevators in the world.
Wanganui road trips
There are two main roads from Wanganui: SH45 which follows the coast all the way around Mt Egmont through small villages like Okato and Opunake, and the second, SH3, which follows a cross-country route through Stratford to Hawera. If you want to discover the area, simply hire a Budget rental from either Wanganui Airport or Wanganui City locations and hit the road.
Both routes give credibility as to why New Zealand has a reputation as a clean, green country. Make sure you stop and enjoy the views, people and places as you cruise through farmland, bush and small towns.
