Winter Safe Driving

  • Before You Depart: Plan your journey by checking traffic, the travel updates and weather forecast. Your ski resort or lodge may have specific instructions or updates.
  • It's Okay To Delay: Reconsider travel if the weather is undesirable or you don't feel comfortable.
  • Slowly Does It: Drive slowly and allow more space. Drive to the conditions not the speed limit.
  • Beware Of Skidding: Avoid sudden movements, accelerate smoothly and brake gently.
  • Take A Break: Allow for a rest stop every 2 hours.
  • Day Over Night: Drive during the day, where visibility is better. Use your lights dipped in fog, rain or snow.
  • Be Prepared: Make sure you have enough fuel, including for turning back if the weather is not suitable. Ensure you have warm clothing, bottled water and emergency supplies or a survival kit in your vehicle.
  • Know Your Chains: Ensure you know how to fit snow chains, before they're needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our ski and snowboard racks can fit up to 2 snow boards or 3 pairs of skis, depending on the size.

We encourage you to carry snows chains in the South Island from 1 June until 31 October (and if you're travelling to Milford Sound from 1 May until 30 November). You’re required to fit chains when the NZTA, local authorities, resort staff or information signs, advise that chains are required. You should also fit the chains when in thick snow, even if you’ve not yet been advised to fit chains.

Ensure you know how to fit your chains before you depart. When you are on the side of the road or caught in a snowstorm, you want to fit the chains quickly but safely. View this helpful video on fitting snow chains to your vehicle.

You should only drive with snow chains when there’s a visible layer of snow or ice on the road. Drive gently, avoiding excessive acceleration and hard breaking, with a maximum speed of 25 kmph (15 mph). Do not use chains on bare roads as this can damage the car, tyres, chains and road. Once the layer of snow has cleared, pull over in a safe place and remove the chains.

In an emergency remain calm and call 111. In the case of a mechanical breakdown, please call roadside assistance on 0800 652 847 and they will assist you. It’s important If you’re stuck to remain with the vehicle and keep warm until help arrives.

You can stay up to date before departure or during your journey, through the NZTA website. Click here for information on road closures and accidents in the Otago, Queenstown-Lakes District. Your ski resort also may issue advice on roads within the resort.
